Play cube

Design: Piet Design

3-dimensional Old Dutch tiles.

Tile cubes to play, build and rattle with.

On these cubes are old Dutch tiles from the early seventeenth century. These multicolored tiles were often made in the Netherlands when the well-known blue/white Delftware did not yet exist. The production technique, in which four colors were used, was adopted from Southern Europe. Many southern motifs, such as pomegranates and bunches of grapes, were also originally used in the Netherlands. Later on, more Dutch elements were incorporated, such as tulips and the Dutch Lion.

On the early tiles, the corner motifs were just as important as the central image. When four tiles are put together, the complete, regular pattern appears.
The four cubes of the 4-in-1 play cube are sewn together in such a way that by turning and tilting six Old Dutch tile tableaux are created.

Size single play cube: 10 x 10 x 10 cm.
