You can no longer take a bath without a rubber duck. Nevertheless, the invention of this indispensable bathing company is fairly recent. How it originated is unclear, but it is certain that the invention of rubber in the 19th century led to the ancestor of today’s plastic rubber ducks. These special rubber ducks are tufted ducks. The Old Dutch tufted duck has been valued for centuries for its funny feather crown. This duck breed was created in the 17th century by crossing an ordinary Dutch duck with a crested Bali duck, which had met through the mediation of the VOC. Painters from the Golden Age such as Jan Steen and Melchior d’Hondecoeter have immortalized these water birds in various paintings. Charles Darwin described his own ‘tufted duck’ in 1883, which he had specially brought over from Holland.
