‘For the fairest.’
This was written on the golden apple that Eris, goddess of discord, threw among the guests at a wedding.She had not been invited and in revenge wanted to create an argument. She had immediate success: the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite all claimed the apple.
Paris of Troy was chosen to make the decision. All three goddesses promised him great rewards: Hera would give him power, Athena wisdom and Aphrodite the most beautiful woman in the world as his wife.
Paris preferred Aphrodite’s offer and proceeded to kidnap the Greek beauty Helen to Troy. The Greeks were not amused and immediately launched a thousand ships.
