Christmas ornaments go back a long time. In the Middle Ages, during the darkest time of the year, people brought branches of evergreens into their houses. These branches were decorated with apples and nuts.

Later special biscuits and colourful home-made paper decorations were added.

The decoration on these baubles is derived from Imari motifs. Imari is Japanese porcelain which was introduced into The Netherlands by the VOC.

Its colourful combination of blue, red and gold made it instantly popular. Delft potteries responded immediately to this new demand, producing decorative objects in the same colours.

The basic shape of these baubles is the dodecahedron one of the five ‘solids’ of the philosopher Plato. Models of the dodecahedron are known from Roman times.
